Dean Estus Spurgeon age 88, of Ames, died at Boone County Hospital, on September 01, 2016. A visitation will be 5 -7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 6, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way Ames, Iowa with a 10:30 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, Sept 7, at Heartland Baptist Church 3540 Grand Ave. Ames, Iowa. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Dean was born December 13, 1927 in Bloomfield, Iowa the son of Estus and Legia Spurgeon. After graduating from Ottumwa High School. He joined the Army and served from September of 1946, and was honorably discharged in July of 1948. He was also part of the Army Choir. He married Maxine Engel on April 5, 1957 in Omaha, NE. He worked at Carpenter Paper Company for 40 years. He and Maxine owned the Uniform Plus Store, The Paper Store and Pump N Party Shop retiring in 1993. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Heartland Senior Center where he volunteered as a driver for many years after his retirement. He was an Iowa State Ambassador and avid cyclone fan. He was a member of Heartland Baptist Church. His passion was fishing and spending time with his family

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Spurgeon; children, Dee (Chris) Ruggeri; Kim Cross (Bernie Schmidt); Greg Spurgeon; Jane Spurgeon; grandchildren, Christopher (Charita); Ashley; Shannon (Jesse), Mackenzie and Tia; and great grandchildren, Hudson, Cayden and two great granddaughters to arrive soon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
