Ella L. Hocking was born on May 19, 1924 to Fred and Lillia (Harmon) Philip in Shevlin, Minnesota. She married Cecil D. Hocking on November 3, 1947. He died February 17, 1993. Ella was a Navy veteran of World War II. She enjoyed reading the newspaper, sewing, going to auctions and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings. Ella was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and the Roland American Legion Auxiliary.

Ella died at 92 years of age on August 24, 2016 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Ella is survived by three sons, Darrell (Lea) Hocking of Roland, Doug (Pam) Hocking of Ellsworth and Donovan (Carmen) Hocking of West Des Moines; two daughters, Darlene Hocking of Des Moines and Dolores (Garry) Johnson of Story City; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil Hocking, her son, Doliver Hocking, four sisters; and three brothers.
