Naomi Zirilda Ross was born at Lawrenceburg, Ind., July 8, 1844. In 1855 she came with her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Richardson, to Story county, where she spent the greater part of the remainder of her life. She was converted to God when but twelve years of age and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, continuing an earnest and faithful Christian while life lasted. March 17, 1861 she was united in marriage to John McCartney. Eight children were born to them. Two daughters, Mary and Amy passed away in infancy. Another daughter, Mrs. Johanna Tewksbury departed this life July 25, 1913. Mrs. McCartney was in delicate health for many years and was tenderly cared for by her devoted husband and children who did all they could to relieve her of pain and make her life a cheerful and happy as possible. She bore her suffering bravely and retained a lively interest in the welfare of her family and in public events of general interest to the last. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and kind neighbor and friend. Death came very suddenly and released her from pain early Tuesday morning, Oct. 20, 1914. She leaves to mourn their loss her aged husband, five children: Mrs. Alice Jones of Colo, William of Boone, George and Laura and Mrs. Maude Carpenter of Colo; twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; two brothers, Theodore Richardson of Newberg, and M. H. Richardson of Seattle, Wash., besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church Thursday at 11 a. m. conducted by Rev. G. H. Johnson, who chose for a text Amos 4:12. Interment was made in the Colo cemetery. Relatives from a distance who were present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Richardson and Mrs. Nora Phillips of Newberg; Mr. and Mrs. W. McCartney, sons Russel and Boyd of Boone; George Tewksbury of Hampshire, Ill.; Mrs. Carrie Jones Martin of Rockford, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hefley of Cambridge and Mrs. John Sellers of Ames.
