CHAS. H. SCHERMERHORN
Chas. H. Schermerhorn, veteran of the civil war and long time resident of Story county, died Thursday, April 12, 1917, at his home in Bangor, Michigan, shortly after his return from a winter's visit among old friends and old scenes in Nevada. His death followed an illness of only a few hours with neuralgia of the heart and was great surprise for when he left here in March he was regarded as well, and later advices had been to similar effect.
Mr. Schermerhorn was born at Kinderhook, Columbia county, New York, December 28, 1838, and at his death he was aged 78 years, 3 months and 15 days. He removed with his parents at 18 months across the Hudson to Delaware county, where he grew up and was married, August 26, 1861, to Helma Philbrook, who now after more than 55 years of their wedded life survives him He enlisted in October, 1861, in the 8th New York Independent Light Artillery, and he served through the war until his muster out in July, 1865. He came west in the spring of 1869 and located about two miles west of Nevada on the north side of what is now the Lincoln highway. He lived there until 1892, when he sold out and removed to Harvey, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago; but after a residence there of eight years he moved again to Bangor, Michigan, which continued his permanent home. Dan Phillips, who noe resides in Nevada but who used to live nearly across the road from the old Schermerhorn place, and himself hand married sisters, and the relationship between the two families has always been very intimate. In the twenty-five years since the removal of the Schermerhorns visits have been from time to time exchanged, and it was one of these visits here which during the past winter made practicable the renewal of many old associations.
Mr. Sshermerhorn was substantial and most worthy citizen, modest in expression but firm in conviction and believing earnestly in what was good in and for the world. He left to children, and his widow is his only near relative surviving. Notwithstanding the long absence from Nevada, this locality was still regarded by himself and wife as "home," and accordingly his body was brought here for burial, the funeral was being conducted Sunday afternoon form the Phillips home by Rev. McDade, and the services at the grave being in charge of the Masonic order. Mrs. Schermerhorn was accompanied on her sad errand here by a niece, Mrs. Lena Lachamier of Champaign, Illinois, a grand niece, Miss Ruth Philbrook of the same place, and a grand-nephew, Fred Porter of Thomasboro, Illinois.
