Suicide at I. S. C.*
On last Friday morning Mr. H. E. Hanna of the college committed suicide by the chloroform method. Mr. Hanna was a young man about twenty one years of age and comes from the little town of Garrison in Benton county. He entered school last fall and since that time has frequently been the victim of despondent, morose spells but even those who had noticed this in him had not thought of his doing the rash act of Friday morning. During the forenoon he skipped classes and went down town where it appears that he bought a pint bottle of chloroform at Gamble's drug store and returned to the college. When his roommate went into the room later he noticed that he was lying on the bed, apparently asleep, but thought nothing of it and went about his work. Not until his failure to respond to the call for dinner and an attempt to arouse him was it discovered that he was in an unconscious state. He has saturated the pillows with chloroform and placed them over his head as he lay in the bed. All efforts to revive him were futile and he died shortly afterwards. His parents were notified and same at once taking the body to Garrison for burial.
*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "I. S. C." was the Iowa State College, now Iowa State University.
