J. H. Watkins

Mr. Joseph H. Watkins was born in Logan county, Ohio Dec. 25 1839. He was married to Sarah A. Farrington at Zanesfield, Logan County, Ohio December 29 1859. In 1871 they came to Iowa and made their home on a farm near New Providence and later moved to a farm north of Colo where they remained until his wife's health failed when they moved to Colo where they resided until her death seven years ago. Since then Mr. Watkins has lived with his children. He had been failing in health for about a year and for six months his suffering has been very severe which he endured with great patience always looking forward to the time when he could join loved ones gone before. All that willing hand and loving hearts could do was done to relieve his suffering and restore him to health but to no avail and death came to his release Feb. 10 1914. He was a member of the Friend's church. He was also a member of J. B. Steadman G. A. R. Post at Colo having served in the civil war. He was an affectionate father, a true friend and a kind neighbor. He laves to mourn his loss, ten children, twenty seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, besides a host of friends. The children present at the funeral were O. H. Watkins of Clinton; Mrs. C. H. Moore, Collins; Mrs. G. A. Heard, Miltonville; Mrs. J. I. Irvine, Shipley; Mrs. Cora Richardson, Rolfe; E. J. Watkins, Cedar Rapids. The other four are C. E. Watkins, Jefferson, South Dakota; Mrs. Ella Baldwin, Avalon, California; C. L. Watkins, Olds, Alberta, Canada; Mr. F. A. Ginter, Strool, South Dakota. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Thursday at 11 a. m. conducted by Rev. J. S. Boreman of Cambridge assisted by Rev. G. H. Johnson and he was laid to rest beside his wife at the Colo Cemetery.
