At the age of 16 he came to America, settling in Vermont and later moving to Green Mountain, Iowa. He united in marriage with Miss Addie Wallace. To this union was born three sons, one of whom, George, passed away in 1905. Mrs. Crawford died before the family moved to State Center in 1879.

On February 23, 1887, Mr. Crawford was united in marriage with Miss Cornelia Lang. To this union were born two daughters, both of whom survive. The family moved to Nevada in 1900. Here, on February 19, 1903, Mrs. Crawford died, leaving him to walk alone with his children for the second time.

In September 1915, Mr. Crawford moved to Des Moines to make his home with his daughter. For the past two years he has been failing rapidly. He was not sick, it was only the infirmities of old age manifesting themselves. Steadily the strength failing and the life ran lower and lower until at 10:15 on the night of July 5th, the end came and he was asleep.

He was a good citizen, a kind father and a friendly neighbor. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at State Center, transferring his membership to the Nevada lodge when he moved here. The members of that lodge, assisted by the State Center lodge, had charge of the ritual services at the grave.

Mr. Crawford leaves to mourn his loss, two sons J. J. of North Platte, Nebraska, and Robert K. of Howard, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Pratt and Miss Florence of Des Moines, one sister, Mrs. Eliza Philbrick of Epsom, New Hampshire, and a large circle of friends.
