Edward “Ed” Daniel Kennedy, 81, of Nevada formerly of Des Moines, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Ed was born March 27, 1934, in Corning, Iowa the son of James Patrick and Bernice Mary (Cullen) Kennedy. He graduated from Corning High School in 1952 and served in the United States Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956. Ed received a bachelor’s degree in business and agriculture education at Maryville, Missouri. While in college, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He then managed an FFA office and then a manager at Production Credit in Mount Ayr. Ed retired in 2006 after serving eight years as an auditor for the State of Iowa.

Ed was married to Pat Baker from 1967-1977 and adopted Pat’s children: Barb, Carla and Bill. The couple made their home in Mount Ayr. Ed was then united in marriage to Carla Mae Benell on November 14, 1980, in Des Moines. He was a devoted member of Wakonda Christian Church in Des Moines where he served as head usher and was always willing to help fix things around the church.

Ed enjoyed music, gardening, traveling and volunteering as a grandparent at Studebaker Elementary School.

Ed is survived by his wife, Carla; his step-children: Bill Baker, Carla McDaniel, Barb (Rick) Supinger, Lynn (Rick) Cave, Susan Burham and Mary (Dave) Chase; his brothers: Bernard (Marge) Kennedy, Louis (Kay) Kennedy and Richard (Carol) Kennedy; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Wakonda Christian Church in Des Moines. Private burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date at Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wakonda Christian Church in memory of Ed.
