Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Philip E. Halverson was born August 28, 1931 to Mildred (Ryen) and Lester Halverson. He was raised in Slater, Iowa and had great pride in his hometown as well as his Norwegian heritage. Phil served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and once he returned, he attended Grandview College, ultimately obtaining his degree in Business and Marketing from Drake University.

Phil worked in the construction industry for much of his life. During his college years, he worked in general construction, working many odd jobs in and around the Slater area. Not only did he enjoy the work, but was rewarded by the lifelong friendships he made during this time. Later on, he worked in sales, building materials, and commercial real estate.

Socializing and laughter were very important to Phil. He not only relished telling stories, but he wanted to hear your story as well. He enjoyed his time with family and his large group of cherished friends. His home with a pool on the south side of Des Moines was often the “place to be”.

In the last several years, he was also a proud member of the Beaverdale community and he volunteered with the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association. These years were filled with cherished memories of the people he met in the community he loved.

Phil passed away peacefully at 84 years of age on February 19, 2016 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

He is survived by his sister, Helen (Don) Burga; his nieces, Melissa Slater, Diana (Darrell) Ocheskey; his nephew, Randy (Lori) Burgan; and many other loved ones and friends.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy; and a brother, David, who both died in infancy.

The family wants to say a special thank-you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the VA Community Living Center for their exceptional display of care and compassion during Phil’s stay.
