Erma A. Larson was born on March 4, 1918 to Louis A. and Anna M. (Kreutner) Blaessin Boone, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, south of Stanhope, and graduated from Boone High School in 1936. She then obtained her cosmetology license from the Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines. Other than working at the munitions plant in Ankeny during WWII, Erma worked as a cosmetologist for 40 years. Erma and Leonard Engleby were married in 1940. He passed away in 1963.
On December 2, 1967, she married Stanley Larson in Jewell. She enjoyed helping Stan on the farm, camping, bowling and needlepoint. Erma was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, the BLCW, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Elm St. Club.
Erma passed away at 97 years of age on February 14, 2016 at Bethany Manor in Story City.
Erma is survived by her son, Leon Engleby (Bonnie) of Henderson, Nevada; her daughter, Cheryl Stubbins (Mike) of Menifee, California; her granddaughter, Aubrey Engelby (Tyler Pipal); her great-granddaughter, Hayli Rhoton; her brother-in-law, Darrell Tjernagel of Boone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; her brother, Marvin Blaessin; and three sisters, Vesta Clark, Ardith Tingwald and Betty Thomas.
She will be remembered for showing that life is not measured only in length, but by the legacy of love we leave behind. We’ll all miss you, mom, for the gracious lady you were.
Private family burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.
