Esther Darlene Hanson was born April 28, 1922 to Cernal and Inger (Ose) Sampson in Radcliffe, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Radcliffe. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1939 and attended college at Cedar Falls and Simpson. She taught in elementary school for several years. Esther and Willard Hanson were married on June 8, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church. They lived in Ellsworth for twenty-five years and then moved to Ames.
Esther was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church until they moved to Ames. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, the Ames Women's Club, and played in numerous bridge clubs.
Esther, devoted Mom and Grandma, passed away peacefully to be with her Heavenly Father on February 6, 2016 at the Zearing Health Care Center at 93 years of age.
Esther is survived by her sons, Gregory Hanson of Des Moines and Frank Hanson of Ames; her daughter, Cynthia (Steven) Quam of Urbandale; four grandchildren, Scott Quam, Seth (Amy) Quam, Shaun (Carly) Quam and Samuel Quam; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Anderson of Rochester, Minn., and Lois Biddle of West Grove, Pa.; and her sister-in-law, Ruth (Hanson) Erbes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard Hanson; her sister, Maurine Wegner; and her brothers, Carroll Sampson, Leonard Sampson, Ernest Sampson and Donald Sampson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames.
