OBITUARY

DEATH OF JOHN EMERY

John Emery, one of the pioneers of what is now the Shipley neighborhood, dropped dead Monday morning at the home of his son in Ames, Where he has been recently living. Mr. Emery was 78 years of age and was a native of Madison county, Ohio, where he was a big boy in school when M. C. Allen was a small one. He came with others of his family to Story county in 1857, and settled on an eighty acre farm in the south part of Grant township. Twenty years or more ago he removed to Deep River in Poweshiek county, were he resided until last spring, when he returned to this county and made his home with his son, H. E. in Ames. Very few of the later generation knew of Mr. Emery, but to the pioneers he was well known and by them his death will be regretted. He had a sister, Mrs. Thomas Gossard, who has been spending the winter in Florida but who started north on Monday and is expected at the funeral in Ames on Thursday. The interment will be Thursday afternoon in the Nevada cemetery.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: John Emery died on 28 December 1908. The son referred to, "H. E. Emery," was Hiram E. Emery.
