Doris Lee Oppedal
August 7, 1922 - December 10, 2015
From: Nevada, IADoris Lee Oppedal, age 93, of Nevada, died at her home on Thursday, December 10, 2015.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial will follow in Lake Center Cemetery, 3731-3735 Lakin’s Grove Avenue, Stanhope, Iowa, with military honors conducted by William F. Ball Post No. 48 of the American Legion. Memorial visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services.
Born August 7, 1922, in Warfield, Kentucky, Doris Lee (Booth) Oppedal was one of ten children born to Alexander Lunsford and Emma (Kyle) Booth. She served in the United States Navy (WAVES) during World War II.
On November 22, 1944, Doris was united in marriage to Jean Truman Oppedal at San Leandro, California. Doris taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Warfield, Kentucky, for a few years after her marriage, crossing a stream each day in a boat to arrive at school. In later years, she was employed by Bourns Company in Ames, Iowa. She retired from Bourns in 1984, and enjoyed her retirement time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Survivors include four children, Diana Russell of Oak Point, TX, Gary Oppedal of George, IA, James Philip (Marcia) Oppedal of Frisco, TX, and Bruce (Mary) Oppedal of Nevada, IA; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister; four brothers; and many other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years in 1997; her parents; four brothers; her son-in-law; and a daughter-in-law.
Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Doris and her family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doris’ name may be directed to Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada.
