Obituary for Kathy Strum
Kathy was born on February 7, 1947, in Gregory, South Dakota, to Gladys Eva Bower Klein and Ambrose Fred Klein. She was the youngest of six children. She moved to Nevada when she was five and attended the Nevada schools. Kathy and Stan were married in Upper Marlboro, Maryland on May 11, 1965. They have four children: Allison Smith, Penelle Strum, Elisa Gibson and Stanley Strum, II.
She graduated from Iowa State University in 1983 with a BBA in Accounting. She passed the CPA Exam on the first round also in 1983 and she began work at Hertz Farm Management, Inc. in Nevada, Iowa where she worked for over 31 years. She was an officer and a director at Hertz and grew to love the Hertz organization like a second family.
Kathy loved to keep on learning and in 1996 she graduated with her MBA from Iowa State.
One of the challenges she was most proud of was riding a bike across Iowa in 1994 from the Missouri to the Mississippi with her husband Stan and his sister Sue and husband John riding 494 ˝ miles. Kathy and Stan participated at some level on RAGBRAI for over 12 years. She also ran the Dam to Dam 20K race when she was 58 just to see if she could complete the race, which she did.
She was actively involved in many organizations. She was a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, the Iowa Society of CPA’s, the American Society of Women Accountants, the local and district level of Rotary International and served 7 years on the City Council in Nevada, IA. She was also the Treasurer for Memorial Lutheran Church for 7 years and taught Sunday School for many years.
In 2005, she received the Public Service Award from the Iowa Society of CPA’s with honorable mention by the American Institute of CPA’s. In 2012, she received the Meritorious Service award from Rotary International District 6000. She received the “Member of the Year” award twice from the Ames Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants. One in 2007 and again in 2011.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Gladys and Ambrose Klein; two brothers: Robert Klein, James Klein; two nephews: Andrew Klein, Carl Klein; one niece, Julie Ann Klein; and one great-niece, Amanda “Kelsey” Cox.
She is survived by her husband Stanley; three daughters: Allison Smith, Penny (Stephanie), Elisa (Mike); one son: Stan; seven grandchildren: Austin Gibson, Michaela Gibson, Tristan Gibson, Tate Gibson, Allan Wright, Michial Armstrong, Ashley Armstrong; two brothers: Alvin (Charlotte)Klein, Leroy (Linda) Klein; two sisters-in-law: Connie Klein, Valorie Klein; one sister: Margaret (Harry) Kapp; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Kathy was blessed with a loving family and many special friends. She was very grateful for all the support from her family and friends.
Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Monday, December 28, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street, in Nevada with Fr. Tim Fitzgerald and Reverend Myron Herzberg officiating. Family will greet friends at 4 p.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada or SS John and Paul Catholic Church in Altoona.
