From Nevada Representative February 4, 1891

Obituary.

Mrs. Thomas Emery, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Gossard, Grant township, January 28th, 1891, was in her 86th year, having been born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, May 3rd, 1805. She was married June 24th, 1834. She moved to Ohio in 1838, and thence to Nevada in 1857.

Her membership with the M. E. church dates from 1842. Her home was a resort for the old pioneer Methodist preachers, Jacob Young, James Finley, and others well known in early history of Methodism, who made their headquarters at her hospitable dwelling, when in its neighborhood. Thos. Emery was one of the early abolitionists, and her roof sheltered many a poor runaway slave of the road to Canada and freedom. Since the death of her husband, in 1869, she lived with her daughter Mrs. S. J. Gossard until her decease. Her dying words were: "Jesus be with me." The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. Fegtly.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. S. J. Gossard" was Sarah Jane (Emery) Gossard, wife of Thomas M. Gossard.
