Mrs. John J. Miller favorably known to Story county people died at her home in Monona county, Iowa, Feb'y 18, 1889. The Mapleton Press contains the following obituary notice:
Julia Jones was born June 11, 1849, and was married September 18, 1870 to John Miller. Mrs. Miller was a woman very highly esteemed by all who knew her. She was converted, I am told, in early life and was for a number of years a member of the M. E. church. She leaves quite a family of children to mourn her loss, among them an infant but a few months old. She has been a great but patient sufferer. Her funeral was held at the home and was largely attended. The services were conducted by the writer who spoke from the text "Though I Walk Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death." Shadows cannot be unless there is light. The child of God peeps through the shadow. The sting of death is not in the shadow, for the sting of death is sin. Sin gone and the sting has no place. When we pass the shadow it will be light uninterrupted, no more shadows, but like the fabled bird that beats its wings against the cage; now bursts the door asunder and soars away towards the sun. So God's child bound down by care and the infirmities of the mortal, finally outgrows the body and the redeemed spirit mounts upward to the "land of the living" and that home of singing. Bereaved ones try to meet her beyond the shadow. P. C. STIRE.
