Amanda L. Mathews was born in Champaign county, Ohio, Aug. 27, 1835, died at her home near Nevada, Story county, Iowa, Aug. 29, 1888. She was married to I. H. Matthews Sept. 21, 1852, in Hardin county, Ohio. Fourteen years ago she came with her husband and family to Iowa and settled in Story county, where she lived till the time of her death. Thirty two years ago she was converted and joined the M. E. church and has since lived a faithful member of the same. During her last illness she suffered much but was patient and her faith in God remained unshaken till the last. She was a faithful wife, an affectionate mother and a devoted Christian. She leaves a husband and two married daughters to mourn her loss. Her funeral took place at her home and was conducted by Rev. A. T. Jeffrey, assisted by Rev. J. Fegtly and was attended by a large circle of friends and relatives who followed the remains to their last resting place in the beautiful cemetery of Nevada.
