From Nevada Representative January 18, 1888
In Death Triumphant.
Died, Jan 13th, 1888, Nevada, Ia. after a protracted illness, Miss Mary Jane Buchanan, in the 41st year of her age.
The deceased was born in Orange Co., N. Y., June 1st, 1847. She was unfortunately injured when only four months old and was never able afterward to use her lower limbs. The family subsequently removed to Ill. Here the father died, and a few years after the family came to reside in Story Co. In the winter of 1866-7 Mary was happily converted and from that time she has been a consistent christian. A few years since she entered into, and has since professed the blessing of holiness. Her religious home has been in the M. E. Church. Her cheerful, happy and contented state of mind, amid her suffering and her consequent "shut in" condition is well known amid a large circle of friends. She naturally had a bright mind and was endowed with a warm, sympathetic heart. Though her feet could not carry her, yet her hands continually were engaged in some kind of service. Though illy supplied with life's luxuries she was ever mindful of the wants of others. She loved the Church services and specially was interested in the Sabbath School. But her life wore its special bloom and shone its highest worth in her faith. The crowning triumph of the 21 years of religious life was her victory in her last illness. Her ordinary health seemed to break last July, but culminated in a closing attack of 10 week's duration. Seldom does christian faith have a more certain and definite triumph. It was evident in her testimony, in her repose of soul and the engaging of her whole powers of thought.
She was buried from the M. E. Church Sunday morning at 11 A. M. Sermon by request, by the writer, from the text selected by herself, "Mary hath chosen that better part which shall not be taken away." The sympathies of a large number of friends and citizens are with the aged mother who was permitted to see her child of 40 years care and solicitude safely housed with the "Lambs of the Upper Fold."
