M. C. Jones, station agent at Ames and Mayor of the town, died Saturday night at his home in that city after a protracted illness. He was a man of exemplary character, unfailing courtesy and wide popularity. His funeral yesterday afternoon was attended by a great number of friends and by a large representation of the Masonic fraternity throughout the country.

Mr. Jones was born in Northfield, Vt., July 20th 1842; enlisted in Co. K 7th Vt. Inv. May 27, 1861; was promoted to the Q. M. sergeant; served at Ship Island and in the battle of Port Fisher; was honorably discharged for disability; removed to Iowa in 1868; was elected Mayor of Ames in 1886 and 1887; was 14 years an employe of the Northwestern Ry.; died May 28, 1887, 6:15 P. M.
