On Sept. 23rd, at three o'clock A. M. Matthew Bates of Howard township passed away. Mr. Bates was born in the county Lyrone*, Ireland, March 17th, 1828* in the 58th year of his age.
At the age of about 18 years he left his native land and went to Canada, where he lived until 1856. In February 1856 he moved to Howard township this county, where he has lived ever since. he was the father of 13 children, 9 boys and 4 girls, all of whom are living with the exception of 3 boys. He has four brothers and one sister living. One brother and the sister still lives in Ireland. One brother, Samuel Bates, lives in Nevada, and the other two, Joseph and Williams, live in Brooklyn, N. Y. Mrs. Bates* died in Oct. 1878.
Mr. Bates was an industrious, and honest man. he was above all noted for his kindness of heart, being ever ready to give assistance to his poorer neighbors. When any one was in trouble, whether in sickness, or in other time of need, Mr. Bates was ever ready to do what he could to help those in need. His death will be regretted by all who knew him. His disease was stenosis of the stomach from which he suffered several years. His funeral was held on Friday at the Sheffield school house, the writer attending.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Mathew Bates headstone plainly reads "BORN NOV 27, 1827" and I am sure the "county Lyrone" should be County Tyrone. "Mrs. Bates" was Cythia/Cyntha Bentley who died 11 October 1878.
