From Nevada Representative February 11, 1885
Died.
Friday evening, Feb. 6th, 1885, at his home in Nevada, of heart disease, John W. White, aged 38 years. The deceased was reared in Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania and went from there into the army, serving three years as a drummer boy in the army of the Potomac. As the result of exposure in the service he contracted the affection of the heart which troubled him all his subsequent life and ultimately caused his death. He came west after the war and lived in Illinois and in Cedar county he was married to Miss Eliza Hoyman. He came to Story county about ten years ago and lived at first on a farm in Milford township but for the greater part of the time in Nevada. He was engaged at different times in the hardware and music trades, and for over two years before his death had been associated with J. F. Gillespie in the grocery business. He was a member of the orders of Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and Legion of Honor, and of the City Council; and he had for many years been identified with the Methodist Church. His immediate relatives in this county are his wife, five children--three girls and two boys--his brother, L. E. White, and his sisters, Mesdames C. M. Minkler and G. W. Hoyman. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church, Sunday, 2 P. M., by Rev. M. A. Wright, and the services at the grave were in charge of the Odd Fellows.
To all with whom Mr. White came in business or social contact he was known as a man of strict integrity, agreeable manners and public spirit. In his decease his family and relatives have lost a wise and affectionate husband, father, brother and friend, the town in which he lived one of its most exemplary citizens, and the country at large a devoted patriot. Well may our entire community, as it does, recall with pride the fact that he so worthily lived and wrought in our midst, and profoundly sorrow at his death.
For the kindnesses and assistance offered by the neighbors and friends during the long illness of Mr. White and at the time of his death, Mrs. White and the other relatives desire to express their thankful appreciation.
