From Nevada Representative January 23, 1884

Died.

In Carroll Dec. 11th, 1883, Mrs. Mary, wife of Rev. H. W. Forbes.

Many of our readers will remember Mrs. Forbes as a former resident of Nevada and an active work in the Temperance Cause. We take from the Carroll Herald the following appreciative obituary notice: Miss Mary Broadwell was born in Seymore county, Conn., where the early years of her life were spent. She united with the Congregational church at the early age of fifteen, and for over forty years lived a consistent Christian life. At the age of twenty she removed from her home in Connecticut to Urbana, Ohio, and in 1849 was married to Rev. H. W. Forbes, and united with the Presbyterian church of West Liberty, Ohio, of which he was pastor. In 1854 Mr. and Mrs. Forbes moved to Cambridge, Henry county, Ill., where they labored until the fall of 1860, when they moved to West Irving, Benton county, Ia., which State has since been their home. Mrs. Forbes was greatly interested in Sunday school work and eminently successful, both as teacher and superintendent. Her interest was early awakened by the crying need of active workers in the cause of temperance, and for many years she was actively engaged in helping forward woman's temperance work, both upon the platform and is their councils. Her life was full of good labors, and rich in that joy, which whatever the outward circumstances, comes from the sense of usefulness in the kingdom of the Lord; and no doubt, as she passed from earth to the mansions above, she received the greeting, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." Mrs. Forbes leaves a husband and six children to mourn her loss. But they mourn not as those who have no hope; and they all have the reward of knowing that by their strong hands and tender care their wife and mother was stayed in her long illness, and her suffering soothed. Her life was one of those for which all are glad, because it points all who know it to Jesus who was the source of her life and inspiration of every deed.
