William "Billy" Swanson (1862-1883)

SWANSON

From Nevada Representative December 5, 1883

Marshalltown had a murder last week. Billy Swanson, a drunken barber, and Eugene A. Sheldon, a gambler, quarreled over a woman Tuesday evening. The former was shot in the heart and died two days later.* The Times Republican makes this occurrence the text for one of its periodical invectives against the dens of iniquity and debased and desperate characters which infest that city. Murder is the natural outcome of their presence, and crime the every day result. It is no wonder that the Times Republican finds it necessary to voice the deparation of respectable citizens.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Death records show William Swanson died on 29 November 1883.
