From Nevada Representative March 28, 1883

The death of Mrs. Edward Barstow, which occurred at Ames last Friday morning, is surely a sad event; and the following sympathetic utterance of the Register will find a feeling response in the hearts of all our readers: The city of Ames and the household of President Welch, of the State Agricultural College, are in the surprise of a great sorrow in the death of Mrs. Edward Barstow. Mrs. Barstow, who was so well known to and so well loved in so many Iowa homes, as Genevieve Welch, was the President's only daughter, and the loss to him is one that this world cannot mend. In the circles of Iowa there was no young woman of sweeter worth or more lovable qualities, and her sudden death, under the pitiful circumstances and peril of maternity, will be like a personal grief to many thousands of people in this and other States.
