Obituary from Memorial Services of Iowa, Ankeny, Polk County, Iowa:
Thomas Cleaver Massy, 84, of Waterford Assisted Living in Ames, IA, went to be with his heavenly Father on Wednesday, October 14, 2015.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday October 17, 2015 at Memorial Services of IA (4208 N Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny IA), with burial at Story Memorial Gardens in Ames. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior, also at the funeral home.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at the Waterford Assisted Living following the burial.Tom was born on November 2, 1930 to his parents Roy and Nellie Massy in Redstone Township, PA. The family moved to upper Michigan, where they ran a resort on Indian Lake.
Tom enlisted in the navy in his high school years. He was united in marriage to his wife, Carolyn Miller of Madrid, IA in June of 1954. They lived in the Indian Lake, MI area for 13 years. Tom reenlisted in the Navy Seabees in 1967. While serving in both Korea and Vietnam he received the rank of Command Master Chief. In 1987 the U. S. State Department contacted him about being the overseer of the construction of several overseas embassies. He continued this work until his retirement, when he and his wife settled in Ames, IA.
Tom leaves behind his wife of 61 years Carolyn Massy, his brother Dave Massy of Lansing, MI, a sister-in-law, Helen Miller of Story City and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Betty Fox, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.
The family prefers memorials be given in Tom's name to the U.S. Seabee Museum 1001 Addor St., Port Hueneme, CA 93043.
