Obituary for Burton Arthur Thompson

Burton Thompson, age 99, of Ames, IA, died on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Burton was born April 3, 1916 in Colfax, North Dakota to Thomas H. Thompson and Anna (Ohme) Thompson. He was united in marriage to Elsie Strietelmeier of Eagle Grove, Iowa, on June 29, 1938 and enjoyed 70-1/2 years of marriage. To this union, Burton and Elsie had three children: Marlene, Charles, and Caroline. Burton and Elsie lived in the Holmes-Clarion area for about 11 years and in 1949, bought a farm near Radcliffe where Burton farmed until his retirement in 1982. They then moved to Roland and, in July 2008, moved to Windsor Oaks Retirement Community in Ames where Burton now resided. Burton was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church near Radcliffe for 66 years.

Burton had a green thumb and enjoyed watching his plants, vegetables and flowers grow. He also liked to bake angel food cakes and make anise candy to share with family and friends. Over the years he enjoyed carpentering and made wooden boxes on rollers for holding cobs for cob and wood stoves, toy boxes, candle holders from insulators, whirlybirds made from bicycle wheels, end tables and coffee tables made from electrical spools and carpet, clocks from slabs of walnut, wall hangings, Christmas trees and crosses from test tubes and many other things for his family and friends. Burton and Elsie enjoyed traveling and took many trips all over the United States and to Europe. Burton enjoyed reading newspapers to keep up with current events and the Iowa magazine. He had a great sense of humor and loved visiting with family and friends. He especially enjoyed the visits and phone calls from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed by all those that knew and loved him.

Burton is survived by his children, Charles (Tilda) of Ames and Caroline Swenson of Story City; seven grandchildren, Natalie (Steve) Montross’ of Winterset, Gerald Claude of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kelvin Claude of South Korea, Jennifer Swenson of Story City, Michelle (Reid) Stephenson of Ames, Kari (Jeremy) Erdman of Driggs, Idaho, and Michael (Melissa) Thompson of Omaha, Nebraska; five great-grandchildren, Christina Claude, Brandon, Brittany and Stephanie Montross’, and Megan Claude; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elsie, brothers-Tilbert, Kermit and Hiram Thompson, Maynard, Oscar and Alfred Toftee; and one sister, Bertha Brink; a daughter, Marlene Claude, son-in-law’s, Clayton Claude and Don Swenson, and a great-grandson Christopher Claude.
