Elaine Arless Hegland was born October 13, 1936 to Elmer and Elma (Asbe) Kalvig in Iowa City, Iowa. She was a 1954 graduate of Kanawha High School and attended Waldorf College, graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in 1956. Elaine then taught elementary school for six years in Billings, Montana and Ankeny, Iowa.

On September 23, 1962, she married Merlen T. Hegland in Williams, Iowa. They lived in Jewell 42 years where they farmed and raised their two children, Jill and Vicki. During this time, Elaine devoted her life and love as a wife and mother. Upon their retirement from farming, Merlen and Elaine moved to Ames and worked as house parents in the Greek system at Iowa State University. They retired from this position in 2003 after 16 years of service.

Elaine passed away at 78 years of age on August 5, 2015 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Elaine is survived by her children, Jill (John) Shilkaitis and Vicki (Jack) Taylor, all of Ames; four grandchildren, Jack Shilkaitis and his wife, Marie of Urbandale, Joey Shilkaitis of Ames, Keaton Taylor of Ames and Riley Taylor of Ames; and her great-grandson, George.

Her parents, husband, four brothers and one sister preceded Elaine in death.

Memorials may be directed to Bethany Manor in Story City.
