Donald Riggs
November 22, 1920 - July 24, 2015

“For me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” Donald entered into the presence of his Lord and eternal life on July 24 while a resident of Bethany Manor. Donald was born to Rev. Fred and Lilly Riggs in Garber, IA. His family moved frequently as his father served as a United Brethren minister. Donald graduated from Webster City in 1939 and later that year the family moved to Ames.

Donald started working for the City of Ames Electric Dept. in 1941 at the power plant. He entered the Army-Air Corp later in 1941 and served in WWII until discharged in 1945. He returned to work for the city of Ames after the war. He advanced in positions while working at the light plant and in 1971 he was named the City of Ames Power Plant Superintendent. When he retired in 1982 he was honored with a key to the city of Ames for “his faithfulness, ability, and longevity.”

Donald was active in his church (Calvary United Methodist), the mens and seniors bowling league and the Songbirds. He enjoyed working over 20 years as an usher for the Iowa State football program.

Donald met Doris Griffith in 1940 and they were married in 1941. They celebrated 70 years together before Doris passed away in 2012. Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his daughter, Janie; his parents; three sisters; and three brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Peggy; his brother Carl (Connie) and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Thank you to the staff of Waterford Assisted Living of Ames, Bethany Manor in Story City, and the entire team of hospice care givers from Caring Initiations of Des Moines for their excellent care and comfort given to Donald.

A memorial service will be held on at 11:00 am Saturday, August 8 at Calvary United Methodist Church 24th and Hoover, Ames, IA . There will be a private inurnment at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be designated to Calvary United Methodist Church or the Ames Emergency Shelter Project.
