George Gustav Gutmann, Jr. was born December 4, 1923 to George G. and Cecile (Erickson) Gutmann, Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. George graduated from Denison High School in 1941 and served in the United States Navy. He served in the Navy Reserve from 1947 to 1967. George and Ruth West were married on April 6, 1946 in Des Moines. He worked for Dahlberg Motors as a mechanic, parts manager and then in sales. George later worked as a purchasing manager for the Iowa DOT, retiring in 1986.
George loved to read, mostly non-fiction, and enjoyed running and gardening. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, and a Boy Scout leader for many years. He traveled often to the states of California and Washington to spend time with his family. George was proud of the fact that he had lived at the same house on Maxwell Avenue in Ames since 1947, making many home improvements during that time. He married Carmen E. Christian on March 25, 2000 in Ames.
George passed away at 91 years of age on March 3, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
George is survived by his wife, Carmen Gutmann, of Ames; two sons, Dennis (Audrey) Morton, of Norco, California and Robert (Linda) Gutmann, of Puyallup, Washington; two step-daughters, Renee Murray and Rhonda Toll, both of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth; two sisters, Helen Kibby and Geraldine Jones; and one brother, Jack Gutmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to MGMC Foundation, Israel Family Hospice House, 1111 Duff Ave., Ames, IA 50010.
