Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Hertha Emilie Betts, 95, died in her sleep at the Waterford Assisted Living Home in Ames, Iowa on February 26, 2015. A private family memorial service and burial will be held at a later date at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.

Hertha is survived by her sons, Daniel Morton Betts, DVM (Joan Bolin Betts) of Ames, Iowa, and Donald Stephen Betts (Sharon Betts), of The Villages, Florida. She is also survived by six grandchildren including: Audrey Betts Wheeler (Mark), of Ames, Iowa; Katherine Betts Naatjes, of Milford, Iowa; Daniel S. Betts (Kris), of Marietta, Georgia; Stephen Betts, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Amanda Betts Wand, of Galena, Illinois; Adam Betts, of San Marcos, California and Stephanie Ransom and Michael Ransom, both of Springfield, Illinois. In addition, Hertha is survived by a brother, LaVerne Dohrmann (Shirley), of Davenport, Iowa, as well as by six great-grandchildren.

Hertha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Morton Betts; her parents; seven of her siblings (including her twin sister, Roberta Lueders); and by a daughter-in-law, Julia Anderson Betts.

Hertha was born on March 30, 1919, in Hawkeye, Iowa. She was the daughter of Robert and Amanda Dohrmann, and was the eighth of nine children. Hertha married Robert Betts in Rock Island, Illinois in 1937. When Robert was transferred with the John Deere Tractor Works in 1947, they moved to Dubuque, Iowa where they made their home in the “John Deere Addition”. After Robert died in 1986, Hertha continued to live in Dubuque until 2012, when she moved to Ames to be near family.

Hertha was a loving and hard-working wife and mother. As with many Iowa women of her time, Hertha was a wonderful cook. And she not only enjoyed sewing for her family, but also became a skilled seamstress--often sewing formal and wedding attire. In addition, Hertha was a dedicated member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where she regularly helped care for children during services.

The family wants to express appreciation to the staff of Waterford Assisted Living in Ames for their kindness and caring. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, Iowa.
