Mary E. Carlson was born February 10, 1921 to William E. and Ruth E. (Gray) Holmes in Waterloo, Iowa. She moved with her family to Ames when she was 4 years old. Mary attended Ames High School and then married Harlan R. Carlson on May 3, 1939. She was a homemaker and was very active in the Bethesda's women's group, at the Scandinavian Coffee, led the lefsa rolling workshops and volunteered in the church office and the Bethesda Clothing Closet. Mary enjoyed fishing and traveling, but most of all, was devoted to her family.
Mary was a longtime resident of Ames and passed away at 94 years of age on February 18, 2015 in Burnsville, Minnesota.
Mary is survived by her children, Tom (MaryAnn) Carlson, of Tucson, Arizona, Gary (Diana) Carlson, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, Norm (Kathy) Carlson, of Ames, Susan Carlson, of Apple Valley, Minnesota and Nancy Johnson, of Edina, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jean Gaskill, of Tampa, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, David Carlson; and two brothers, William Holmes and James Holmes.
