Max D. Monahan, age 85, of Nevada, Iowa, died at his home on Monday, December 22, 2014.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada, with Fr. Rick Dagit officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery, with military honors by the American Legion. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 5-7 p.m., with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m.

Born April 20, 1929, in Baxter, Iowa, Max Duane Monahan was the second oldest child born to Forrest Patrick and Laura Anna (Koon) Monahan. He grew up and received his education in the Baxter and Des Moines area and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He married Elizabeth Harriet Prindle in Lyle, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Nevada where they raised their family of six children. Max worked for General Telephone Company for many years, beginning as a linesman and progressing over the years to engineer and construction supervisor.

An outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, Max also was an avid horseman and enjoyed many trail rides to the Ozarks. He was a fun-loving family man who loved to tease those he loved. He will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and giving nature.

Max was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada, and was also active in his Union as well as the American Legion and VFW.

Survivors include his children, Marcia (Richard) Kleiman of Tucson, AZ, Daniel Monahan of Tucson, AZ, Teresa (Kim) Krebs of Nevada, Stacie (Carl) Link of Cambridge, Brenda (Kelly) McIntosh of Unadilla, NE, and Stanley (Kathy) Strum of Altoona; 11 grandchildren, Michael, Amanda, Jeramy, Lori, Joseph, Amos, Anna, Emma, Meghan, Ryan, and Carlita; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Dale (Barb) Monahan of San Jose, CA; two sisters, Arlene Bishop of San Jose, CA, and Eileen Talburt of Canon City, CO; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife Liz in 1993; a son, Michael Monahan in 2014; his parents; and a brother, Gerald Monahan.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Max and his family.
