Rosemary Lindstrom Manis died peacefully at her residence in Gainesville on October 30, 2014. She was born December 11, 1925 in Ames, Iowa to Ernest W. Lindstrom and A. Cornelia Lindstrom.

Rosemary attended Iowa State University for two years, and then took a short break to travel with her parents to Medellin, Colombia where she worked as a bank teller. It was here that Rosemary met Wallace Eugene (Gene) Manis, a rubber researcher working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture advising the Colombian government.

Rosemary returned to the States and enrolled at the University of Colorado graduating in1947 with a degree in history.

On August 20, 1949, she and Gene were married in Ames. The newlyweds moved to Los Diamantes, Costa Rica. Over the years, Gene’s career also took them to Ceylon, Nigeria, Miami, Thailand and, lastly, Gainesville in 1977—an odyssey that Rosemary dubbed her “great adventure.”

Rosemary taught primary, secondary or college classes wherever she lived. In Gainesville, she taught math and English as a second language at Santa Fe College. She took great pleasure in seeing former students around town.

After retiring, Rosemary volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, UF Health Shands Hospital and served as president of Planned Parenthood in Gainesville.

An avid reader, Rosemary will best be remembered for her interest in politics, concern for the underdog and hiking in the outdoors.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband and her sister, Cornelia “Nike” Buck. She is survived by her brother, Eugene S. Lindstrom; sons Will (Jean) of Sammamish, WA, Steve (Lane) of Jacksonville, FL, and Andy of Madison, WI; and six grandchildren: Will’s sons Scott and Paul, and Steve’s children Olin, Eric, Mason and Jenna.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10a.m. Saturday December 13, 2014 at the Harn Museum of Art, 3259 Hull Road, Gainesville, Florida.
