James Adams Obrecht was born on November 7, 1935 to Martin Otto and Ethel Mae (Adams) Obrecht in a farmhouse near Kirkman, Iowa. He graduated from Ames High School with the class of 1955. Jim married Mary Lenox in September of 1958. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1960. After graduation, Jim worked at Walter Rexall Drug in downtown Ames. Jim and his step-father, Phil Walter, opened North Grand Rexall Drug, near what is now North Grand Mall. In 1978, Jim established a pharmacy in Huxley called Ballard Drug. He retired after working for Hy-Vee in Ames and Boone.
Jim and Judirae (Hendricks) Harris were married on November 9, 1985. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames where he had served on the board. Jim was a charter member of Ames Morning Rotary, served as President of the Ames Chamber of Commerce and over the years served on the boards at First United Methodist Church, The United Way of Story County, and the Story County Heart Association.
Jim died on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 78 years of age.
Jim is survived by his wife, Judirae Obrecht, of Ames; his sons, James A. (Sandra) Obrecht Jr., of Perry, Florida and Michael R. (Julie) Obrecht and their children, Kelsey and Alison, of Hudsonville, Michigan; his daughter, Jennifer L. (Dongsheng) Zhai, of Fort Dodge; his step-daughters, Wendi L. Harris (Stuart Oxer) and their children, Grant and Elizabeth, of Ankeny and Susan E. (Kevin) Marschke and their children, Harris, Ean and Rachel Deno, of St. Paul, Minnesota; his brother, Dean (Dianne) Obrecht, of Ames; numerous nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Mary Obrecht, of Deland, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his step-father, Phillip Walter.
Jim was a gentleman and a gentle man. He will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him.
