OBITUARY.

Died at her home in Nevada, Monday, December 20, 1901, Alice M. Martin, wife of J. F. Martin, aged 40 years, 1 month and 4 days.

Mrs. Martin's friends who were near enough had warning for a day or two, but to those whose information was not wholly up-to-date, her death comes as a great shock. She was on the street in apparently her usual health on Wednesday and Thursday; on Friday she was to have been installed worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star but was ill, on Sunday she was operated upon for appendicitis and her condition found hopeless, and on Monday evening she died.

Alice Slifer was the daughter of Jacob and Catharine Slifer and ws born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois, November 26, 1861. When she was eight years old the family moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, but she later returned to Mt. Carroll for a couple of years in seminary there. She was married June 26, 1883, to Attorney J. F. Martin of Nevada, and has since made this city her home. She leaves her husband, an only son Lester, aged six years, her stepson Chas., her parents and a brother and sister at Grundy Center, and her remaining sister Mrs. Ed. Statler of this city.

Mrs. Martin was a woman of rare worth: unselfish, energetic, patient and brave. She filled her place in this world as few women could or should have filled it, and the grief that her death causes to those nearest to her is shared by the whole community. Sympathy will go especially to her little son, who is the one needing her most of all. Whatever she could do, however, to settle troublesome questions for others she did. She directed the arrangements for her funeral, gave her son into the charge of Miss Doolittle, her nearest friend, and in these and many other ways, emphasized to the last her characteristic thoughtfulness.

The funeral of Mrs. Martin will be held at the residence at 3:00 p. m., January 1st; but at her request there will be no public funeral. Personal friends are requested to call at the above time. The public services under the auspices of the Eastern Star, will be held at the Cemetery at 3:30 p. m., which the public are at liberty to attend.
