Nathan Joseph Smith Borst, 32, of Alexandria, Virginia, died unexpectedly at his home on August 4, 2014. A gathering of friends and family will be held at North Grand Church of Christ in Ames, Iowa, for visitation on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 5 - 7pm, and a service is scheduled at the church for Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at 10am. Burial will be at the Ames municipal cemetery following the service.
Nathan was born on April 25, 1982 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Robert Borst and Becky Paris. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 2000 where he was active in band, choir, speech and theater. He received a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in 2003 and a master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Iowa in 2005.
He married Lindsay Ellen Peterson on May 29, 2005, and they moved to the Washington, DC metro area. Nathan began his career with the Department of Homeland Security as a Presidential Management Fellow in July 2005. Most recently he was the Chief of Staff to the CFO of the Dept. of Homeland Security.
Nathan was a talented pianist and loved cooking, travel, building computers, and watching Star Trek. His sharp wit and sense of humor could always be counted on, and his natural curiosity and adventurous soul were inspiring. He was deeply spiritual, a loyal friend, and completely devoted to his family.
Nathan is survived by wife Lindsay and son Diggory of Alexandria, VA; father Robert and Linda Borst of Ames; mother Becky and Doug Paris of Ames; in-laws Kevin and Lynn Peterson of Ames; siblings Lindsay and Tony Zabawa and nieces Alyssa and Emma of Omaha, Kimberly Paris of Chicago, and brother-in-law Erik Peterson; grandparents Lawrence and Nonnie Smith of Norwalk, Mary Borst of Norwalk, Alan Isaacs of Lexington, KY, Patricia Carlgren of Burlington, and Beverly Paris of Wapello. He leaves behind aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as numerous friends and colleagues from all over the country.
Preceding Nathan in death were his grandfather Clarence Borst, his grandfather Bill Paris, and grandmother Jerry Isaacs.
