Nevada man takes own lifeA thirty-one-year-old man took his life in his home Wednesday morning when he shot himself in the chest with a pistol, according to Story County law enforcement officials and Assistant Story County Coroner Dr. Pang of Ames.
Van Samson, 1912 Fourth St., was found dead in the bedroom of his home by Story County Sheriff John Stark, Detective Rex Sparks and Nevada Chief of Police Ray Couser at about 10 a.m. after receiving a call about 9:56 a.m.
Dr. Pang said the time of death was thought to have been between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Pang said Samson's wife, Janice, had talked with her husband about 8:30 a.m.
Pang said Samson shot himself through the chest with a .32 caliber pistol, and was dead when authorities arrived at the scene. The Story County Sheriff's Department was in charge of the investigation.

Van C. Samson, 31, died Wednesday morning at his home at 1912 Fourth St., Nevada, of a self-inflicted wound.
Funeral services will be held from the First Christian Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Marvin L. Hulse officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.
Mr. Samson was born to Keese Jr. and Doris Samson in Story County, Iowa, January 13, 1947. He was married to Janice Moody July 16, 1965, in Nevada. he was an employee of the Story County Road Department and a life-long resident of Story County. He was a member of the First Christian Church.
Mr. Samson is survived by his wife, Janice; his mother, Doris, Nevada; two daughters, Debbie, 12, and Judy, 7; three brothers, Paul and Roger, both of Nevada, and Allan of Ames. He was preceded in death by his father.
