OBITUARY OF MRS. JOHNSON

Passed Away Last Week at Home Near McCallsburg

Special to the Journal.
Matilda Christina Johnson was born August 8, 1854, in the village of Skara, Sweden. At the age of 21 years she united in marriage to John P. Hanson, with whom she lived until the year 1888 when he was called by death. In 1882 sh came to America to join her husband who had preceded her nearly two years, and with their family of children settled in Marshalltown. Six children were born to this union, two of whom still survive.

On April 21, 1891, she united in marriage to R. E. Johnson and with her family came to Hardin county, Iowa, to make her home on a farm, and here she spent the rest of her life. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, all still living except on, who passed to the "beyond" some years ago. While her death on June 25, 1923, was a shock to her relatives and friends, it was not unexpected, for she had been in extremely poor health for several months past and had been poorly for the past 10 years. For several days she had been feeling better than for a long time, and seemed especially well all day the 25th. About 9 p.m. she laid down on the lounge for a little rest and about 10 p.m. passed peacefully to rest. She leaves to mourn her loss besides her sorrowing husband: six children, John Alfred Hanson, of Radcliffe; Josephine C. Hanson, at home; and Gust S. Hanson, of Mankato, Minn.; Mrs. Esther Johnson Stenberg, of Radcliffe; Mrs. Freda Friest, of Mankato, Minn.; and Oscar E. Johnson of McCallsburg; twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two brothers in California, and a sister in Sweden. All the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Friest, who was unable to attend. Other relatives present were: Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Weimer of Marshalltown, Hugo Johnson of Algona, Ia.; and Ivan Johnson of McCallsburg.

While Mrs. Johnson was a home loving woman, she had endeared herself to her neighbors and had many friends who will miss her in the years to come. As previously noted, she had been in failing health for some years, but bore her pain patiently, and ever drew nearer to her Savior. Death came as a friend and brought her sweet relief. Always a true Christian, her husband and children take comfort in the thought that she is waiting for them. A large crowd of friends gathered to pay their last respects to the departed at the funeral. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, and the family have the sympathy of the entire community.
