JOHN HATTERY

John Hattery, 86, of Nevada, died Tuesday, March 13, 1984, in Long Term Care at Story County Hospital.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the United Methodist Church in Nevada. Officiating will be Rev. Nancy Schultz, Rev. John Chadwick and Rev. Ernest Larson. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.

John Hattery was born on June 27, 1897, to John H. and Margaret Hattery in Collins. He graduated from Collins High School in 1914.

Mr. Hattery was married to Gladys L. Hansen on June 24, 1940, at the Little Brown Church. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada.

Mr. Hattery lived in Story County for all of his life, except for the five years he lived in Des Moines while serving as the first chief of the Iowa Highway Patrol. He had served as sheriff of Story County from 1930-35, and prior to that served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Mr. Hattery had been a member of the Iowa Bar Association since 1937, served two terms as a state senator and three years on the Iowa Highway Commission.

Mr. Hattery also was involved in several community activities. He set up a fund establishing inspirational programs for Story County 4-H members, had been a member of the Nevada Parks and Recreation Board since 1945, and was the first person elected to the Nevada Rotary Hall of Fame. A few years ago, a park located on north Sixth Street was named after him.

Mr. Hattery is survived by his wife, Gladys; one son, John Robert of Nevada; son brother, Ralph Hatter of Colfax; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, five sisters and one grandchild.

Visitation will begin on Wednesday at the Ryan Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Story County 4-H organization.
