Fred Lee Mathison
July 27, 1931- Jan. 6, 2001

Fred L. Mathison, 69, of Nevada, died of complications from injuries suffered in an automobile accident Saturday at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Lutheran Church with the Rev. Myron D. Herzberg officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the William F. Ball American Legion Post No. 48 in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Fred L. Mathison was born on July 27, 1931, in Nevada the son of Pete and Milly (Frederiksen) Mathison. He earned a master's degree in business administration form Drake University and served time in the U.S. Army counter intelligence corps. He married Maureen A. Daskowski in 1958. She died in 1977. He married Sandy Baker Bartz on Nov. 24, 1979, in Nevada. He had been a Story County supervisor for the past 22 years. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, William F. Ball American Legion Post No. 48, Iowa State Association of Counties and the National Association of Counties. He was past president of the Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee, the Iowa Association of Counties, REAP and Youth and Shelter Services. He was a lifelong resident of Nevada.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Mat Mathison of Columbia, S.C.; three stepdaughters, Stacy Sturdivant of West Des Moines, Shelly Collins of Parker, Colo., and Nicole Althaus of Chanhassen, Minn.; one sister, Janet Anderson of Nevada, and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of services on Tuesday at the Memorial Lutheran Church, Room 200. Memorial donations may be directed to Youth and Shelter Services.

The Chet Ryan Mortuary of Nevada is handling the arrangements.
