Jerry W. Hines
April 5, 1918 to April 23, 2001Jerry W. Hines, 83, of Nevada, died of complications from heart by-pass surgery on Monday, April 23, at Metropolitan Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born April 5, 1918, in Nevada to Len and Alice (Young) Hines. He was a 1939 Nevada High School graduate and served in the Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He married Frances Aylward in October of 1939 in Nevada and later married Ruth (Devick) Cornelius on July 22, 1972, also in Nevada. He retired in 1983 as a machine mechanic and printer at R. H. Donnelley, where he had been employed for 35 years He was a member of the William F. Ball American Legion Post No. 48 and was active in the First United Methodist Church. he was a lifelong resident of Nevada and enjoyed flowers, gardening, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Nevada; three sons, Kent (and Kay) Hines of Johnston, Neal Hines of Ames and Mark Hines of Des Moines; two daughters, Annette Forbes of Ames and Mary (and Jan) Sherwood of Nevada; two stepchildren, Joe Cornelius of Nevada and Debbie (and Scott) Presler of Anamosa; 19 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Paley of Ames.
His parents, five sisters, three brothers, one stepson and one great-granddaughter preceded him in death.
Visitation is being held today (Thursday, April 26) after 3 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada. The family will be present from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
