Leonard H. Ahlquist, 92, of Nevada, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Story County Senior Care from complications of COPD and heart failure.

Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Monday, June 9th, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Inurnment will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Leonard Hugo Ahlquist was born March 7, 1922 in Alexandria, Minnesota, the son of Hugo and Ellen (Karlberg) Ahlquist. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1940. Len married Carol Elaine Staflin at the Lutheran Church in Osakis, Minnesota. To this union, three children were born; two daughters, Barbara, married to Dr. Gerald (Doc) McDaniel of Nevada, Iowa, and Cheryl, married to Dulio Mordini of Madrid, Iowa, and one son, Jerry, who preceded Len in death on December 25, 2006. Len was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church. He also belonged to the Nevada Rotary Club, and enjoyed playing Bridge with the Men’s Club. Before his retirement, Len owned the Ahlquist Insurance Agency in Nevada. He was a former insurance adjuster. Len and Elaine enjoyed their cabin on Lake Ida in Alexandria, Minnesota, especially after their retirement, as does their family. Len loved to fish, play bridge, enjoyed woodworking and flying his airplane.

Besides his children, Len is survived by eight grandchildren: Cindy (Mike) Phelan of Story City, and their children, Rachel, Sarah, and Matthew; Catherine (Geoff) Hubbard of Council Bluffs, and their children, Jacob and Luke; Stephanie Richards McDaniel (Ben Richards) of St. Paul, Minnesota, and their children, Eleanor and Ada; Rob Mordini of Polk City, and his children, Michael and Andrew; John (Nikki) Mordini of Des Moines and their children, Sophia, Maria, and Gianna; Angela (Bill) Cleveland of Atlanta, GA and their son, Alexander; Katherine Ahlquist of Atlanta, GA; Kelly Snider of Colfax, WI and her children, Alexis and Kaitlin; his brother, Paul (Carolyn) Ahlquist of Alexandria, Minnesota; nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Len’s parents, his son, Jerry, a grandson, Les McDaniel, preceded him in death.

The Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
