Elmer James Paul
Aug. 20, 1910-Sept. 23, 2001Elmer James Paul, 91, of Ames and formerly of Nevada, died Sunday at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames of complications from Parkinson's disease. The body has been donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Nevada with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Elmer James Paul was born Aug. 20, 1910, on a farm in LeClaire Township in Scott County, the son of William E. and Mattie O. (Wilson) Paul. He graduated from Davenport High School in 1928, attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill., and graduated from Iowa State University in 1934. He married Eva Arthur March 4, 1935, in Nevada. She died in 1982. He married Helen Wendel Thompson Nov. 1, 1984, in Des Moines. He was a farmer and served as a director of the National Corn Growers Association. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church and also was a member of the Flying Farmers of America, CPS Study Club and numerous farm organizations.
He is survived by his wife; one stepson, Wendel Thompson of Columbia, Md.; three stepdaughters, JoAnn Wer of Omaha, Neb., Karen Johnson of Syracuse, N.Y., and Mary Kercher of Port Tobacco, Md.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, one son and one brother.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name at First United Methodist Church or Mayo Foundation, Department of Development, 200 1st St. S. W., Rochester, Minn. 55902; or call (507) 284-8540.
