Wm. H. Boynton Passed Away Today In Ames Hospital
Wm. H. Boynton, 82, longtime resident of Nevada passed away at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames at 6:25 this morning following a stroke which he suffered Saturday morning and from which he had never rallied.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Morfoot Funeral Home with Dr. James O. Simon of Memorial Lutheran church in charge of the services. The body will lie in state at the Funeral Home until the funeral hour.
Mr. Boynton, perhaps the longest continuous resident of Nevada, had apparently been in his usual health and his sudden passing is a shock to his family and friends.
Willard Henry Boynton was the eldest son of Quincy A. and Sarah Hadley Boynton. He was born at Marion, in Linn county on Feb. 24, 1862.
He came to Nevada in a covered wagon at the age of six months. He and his mother made their home in Nevada while the father served in the Civil War. He was three years of age when his father returned from service and the family continued to make their home in Nevada. He and his brothers attended the Nevada schools. Mr. Boynton entered the draying business in Nevada at a very young age and continued in this business and also carrying the mail and express for many years. He retired at the age of 75 years.
Mr. Boynton was married to Ida Belle Lockwood in Nevada on Oct. 30, 1884. His bride was a graduate of the Nevada high school with the class of 1883. To this union seven children were born, all of whom survive the father and mother but the eldest daughter, Mrs. Pearl McKearney, who passed away in 1939 and is survived by one son, Galen McKearney, now in service.
The other children are Jessie Koehrsen of Mason City; Edith Hobson of Collins; Willard Boynton of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Ruth Hunt, Bernice Smith and Hazel Hall of Nevada.
The wife and mother passed away in Nevada, Feb. 8, 1935. Mr. Boynton continued to keep his home at 308 Seventh street, until a year and a half ago when he took up his residence at the Nevada hotel.
Mr. Boynton continued active despite his advancing years. His mind was clear and alert and, being familiar with the early day life of the city, with which he grew up, he was always interested in everything for the good of Nevada and community.
Besides his children and grandchildren Mr. Boynton is survived by four brothers, in which family group he was the eldest. The brothers are George Boynton of Renville, Minn.; M. E. Boynton of Chicago; Frank Boynton of Bangor, Mich. and Steve Boynton of South Haven, Mich.
