John S. Valen
February 20, 1926 - April 5, 2014John was born to John M. and Kaia (Carrie) Valen on February 20, 1926, in Story City. After graduating from high school in 1943, he joined the US Navy and served in the Pacific the last years of WWII. He worked for the US Postal Service from 1946 until he retired in 1988.
John married Dorothy L. Olson of Jewell on February 4, 1950. They were given two sons, Sten and Mike. John was an avid fan of sports. He will be remembered as a kind, generous and patient husband and father.
John Valen 88, of Story City, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 5, 2014 at Bethany Manor in Story City. He had been in declining health the last few years. Private graveside services will be held at the Story City Cemetery. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
He is survived by wife Dorothy of Story City; two sons, Sten of Etne, Norway and Mike and his wife Sue of Story City; two grandchildren, John and his fiancée Megan and Matthew; and two sisters, Hannah and Ruth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven half-brothers and half-sisters, two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
