Last Rites for Grant Jordan At Adams Chapel
Funeral services for Grant Johnson Jordan, 31, victim of a traffic accident early Saturday morning, Oct. 5, which also claimed the life of his fiancee, Josephine Fontana; were very largely attended at the Adams Funeral chapel in Ames, Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7.
Rev. C. E. Lookingbill of Nevada, longtime friend of the family, officiated at he last rites.
The many floral tributes entirely banked all sides of the chapel. They were arranged by Ann Wagner, Selma Thompson and Thelma Severson.
The singer was Earl Holtz of Ames wo sang, "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
The pall bearers were Marion Breckenridge, Cambridge; Marion Minde, Roland; Martin Adams, Nevada; Milford Bunnell, Ames; Raymond Day, Nevada, and Dwight Proudfit of Des Moines.
During the committal in the Nevada cemetery, full military honors were accorded the young man by the Ames V.F.W. post.
The large attendance at the last rites testified to the high respect and esteem in which the young man was held and also testified to the sympathy felt for the family and relatives of the deceased.
Those in attendance from a distance came from California, Cedar Rapids, Ankeny, Ds Moines, Belle Plaine, Clar Lake, Lovilla, Kostza, St. Charles, Ogden, Boone, Polk City, Anamosa, Knoxville, Madrid, Kelley, Huxley, Slater, Fort Dodge, Ventura, Nevada, Ames, Gilbert, Tama, Clarion, Toledo, Blairsburg, Williams, Cambridge, Colo, Roland, Adel, Earlham, Enterprise, Elkhard, Grimes, Marengo and Dayton.
Obituary
The following was read by Rev. C. E. Lookingbill at the funeral service:
Grant Johnson Jordan, son of Mr. and Mrs George Jordan, was born April 30, 1916 southwest of Nevada and Shipley community passed away October 5th at the age of 31 years of age.
He attended Shipley school and graduated with the class of 1933. After graduation he assisted his father in farming, until he was called into the Service of the United States, March 11, 1942.
Corporal Grant Jordan served in the Coast Artillery and was stationed at Camp Callan for eight weeks, being shipped to Oahu, Hawaii, serving there 11 months. From there he returned to Camp Pendelton, Norfolk, Virginia; then to Fort Monroe, and Fort Story; serving at Post Commander and switch board radar. He was discharged January 16, 1946 and has since been assisting his father in farming.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Jordan; brothers--Harvey P. of Ankeny, G.Roy of Ankeny; Ronald D. of Ames, Lawrence K. of Earlham. Sisters -- Dorothy Anita Bell of Des Moines, and Lois Mae Christiansen of Ames; other relatives and a host of friends.
Grant was a member of the V.F.W. of Ames.
