EDWARD MORSE BOARDMAN

Edward Morse Boardman, born in Nevada IA in 1906 and a member of the Nevada High School Class of 1923 and mostly recently of Hendersonville NC, died there Nov. 21, 1986, following a brief illness. He was 80.

The eldest son of Mary and Frank Boardman, Edward grew up in Nevada and attended the Nevada schools through high school.

After leaving Nevada, Mr. Boardman pursued physics and engineering studies at Parsons College, the University of Iowa, and Yale University.

In 1929, Mr. Boardman began the first major part of his career, joining the Bell Telephone Laboratories. It was while doing transatlatic cable research on the west coast of Ireland that he met his wife to be, Bride English. They were married Dec. 27, 1933.

For most of his time with Bell Labs, Mr. Boardman and his growing family lived in Mountain Lakes NJ. His work with Bell Labs centered on two main areas, cables and miniaturization. His work in miniaturization and in the packaging of cable components led to his being offered a position with Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo CA.

In the fall of 1954, the Boardman family followed him to California and to their new home in Palos Verdes Estates.

While at Hughes, Mr. Boardman became director of the Dept. of Product Engineering and was in charge of the miniaturization and packaging of communications components, among them the first electronics to be successfully soft landed on the moon (Voyager).

In 1968, Mr. Boardman retired adn he and Mrs. Boardman moved briefly to Nevada and then to Hendersonville NC.

His death followed lung surgery by a few days. His life had been remarkably free of any debilities.

Survivors include Mrs. Boardman of Hendersonville; two brothers, William K. of Palm Springs CA and Frederick C. of Oklahoma City OK; four sons, Patrick and wife Dorothy of Reidsville NC, Michael of Brookline MA, Frank and wife Jo Lynn of Herndersonville, and William; and five grandchildren, Patrick Jr., Katherine, Edward, Sheila and Matthew.

A memorial/committal service will be held in Nevada next summer on a date yet to be arranged.
