Margaret Lucile Maitland, beloved mother, grandmother, and great‐grandmother passed away March 1, 2014 at the Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames, at the age of 98.

Margaret Maitland was born January 8, 1916, to Clarence Barlow Blanchard and his wife, Julia Ann (Davis) Blanchard in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Margaret attended Boone High School where she excelled at a number of sports, including cheerleading and swimming. Her academic record was so strong that she was recognized by the National Merit Society.

Margaret’s first job was as a clerk at a Woolworth’s five and dime store where she earned 10 cents per hour. Throughout her years as a teenager her dream had been to become a dancer, and she turned that dream into reality when shortly after graduating from high school, she opened her own dance studio. She taught tap dancing and ballet from 1933‐1936 and received certification by the Dance Masters of America.

Margaret became engaged to Andrew Miller Maitland of Ames, and the two were married on March 21, 1936, in Omaha, Nebraska. From 1950 through the early 1960’s, Margaret and Andy owned and operated Andy’s Superette Grocery Store in Ames; after selling the store and business, Margaret worked as a flower designer for Coe’s Flower Shop in Ames for nearly 50 years.

Andy Maitland was a golfer, and Margaret, not wanting to be a golf widow, took up the sport, learning it so well that she would play it for 75 years! Daily exercise, hiking, swimming, and tap dancing had sharpened her natural athletic talents, and she quickly won recognition on the links. She could beat most women, and in couples’ golf, she usually came in with a score lower than the men in her foursome.

Margaret was a member of the Ames Golf and Country Club for more than forty years and was its Women’s Champion Golfer numerous times. In addition, she was Ames Champion Women’s Golfer twice, and Homewood Golf Course’s Women’s Champion for three consecutive years. Her shelf at home bulged with cups and trophies, and she took pride in being one of the founders of the Ames Country Club’s Locust League.

Margaret was also an outdoor person who liked tending her vegetable and flower gardens; inside the house she enjoyed cooking and entertaining, being especially fond of card playing, usually bridge. She liked dressing up and going out for a dinner or an evening dance. Ever the lady, Margaret possessed an outstanding trait of being able to fit into any group, formal or informal. Margaret was an active member of the First Christian Church of Ames and the Tri‐T Sorority. She often volunteered for duties at her church or at Mary Greeley Medical Center. She liked music and played both piano and organ at home for her own amusement and relaxation.

Margaret also liked to travel. She went to Hawaii and other points in the U.S. and also abroad to such countries as Belgium, France, Portugal, and Scotland, as well as to Mexico. Margaret was a poised, thoughtful, and loving woman who lifted the spirits of those around her. One always felt richer in her presence and poorer in her absence.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Alan Maitland of Greenwich, CT, and Larry Edward (Ann) Maitland of Denver, CO; four grandchildren, Toni (Michael) Backman of Cos Cob, CT, Cheryl (Danny) Sondrol of Ames, Andy (Maureen) Moody of Normal, IL, and Ross (Michele)Maitland of Denver, CO; eight great grandchildren, Alicia (Matt) Moulson of Cos Cob, CT, Sean Backman of Cos Cob, CT., Jaclyn (Jonathan) Quick of Los Angeles, CA, Brett Backman of Cos Cob, CT, Taylor and Cara Sondrol of Ames, and Claire and Katherine Moody of Normal, IL; four great‐great grandchildren, Mila and George Moulson of Cos Cob, Ct., and Madison and Carter Quick of Los Angeles, CA.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Andrew, two brothers, Glen (Bud) Blanchard and Earl Blanchard, one sister, Nell Malander and one granddaughter Alicia Maitland.
