Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Edward Jacobson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, 73, of Ames, passed away December 30, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 2 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 3, also at Bethesda.

Edward Charles Jacobson was born July 18, 1940 to Amos O. and Nora B. (Johnson) Jacobson in Roland, Iowa. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa and completed the School of Banking at University of Wisconsin, Madison. He served both in the United States Air Force and the Iowa National Air Guard as a Navigator on the F-89J Aircraft. Ed and Leanna Merritt were married on August 11, 1968 and had two children, Melissa and Joel. Ed worked 39 years for First National Bank of Ames, Iowa beginning his career there as a teller and retiring in 2003 as a Senior Vice-President. He also served as Vice President and Treasurer of Ames National Corporation. Ed was a Rotarian in Ames for 30-plus years and served as Treasurer locally and at a state level. He was also a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and served on many community boards including Bethany Manor, Ames Public Library, Thrivent for Lutherans, and Randall-Story State Bank. He also donated his time to United Way of Story County. Ed enjoyed all things outdoors, working in his garden, traveling with Leanna, family and friends, meeting his coffee group daily, and it was his goal to walk his dog Harley in every park in Ames.

Ed is survived by his wife of 45-years, Leanna, of Ames; his daughter, Melissa (Kevin) Downey and their children, Nicholas and Zachary, of Overland Park, Kansas; his son, Joel (Tiffany) Jacobson, of Ankeny; his brother, Norman "Jake" (Joanne) Jacobson, of Story City; his brother-in-law James (Elenore) Merritt, of Norfolk, Nebraska; 6 nieces and 5 nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Nora; his sisters, Janet Jacobson and an infant sister; his sister-in-law, Joann; his nephew, Daniel; and a great-nephew, Joseph.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Edward Jacobson Memorial Fund, which will be donated, in his name, to Reiman Gardens and other charitable organizations that he appreciated in his lifetime.
