W. L. Tipton was born in Cedar County, Iowa on June 1, 1867, the son of Leonard and Isadore Tipton, and died Jan. 8, 1958 at the Story County Hospital, Nevada, Iowa, at the age of 90 years.
He came to Story county with his parents in December, 1877 and spent his boyhood days in the Collins community. After serving his apprentice in pharmacy under Jim Hanson, he received his original registration on Oct. 7, 1890 and entered into business for himself at Maxwell, Iowa in 1891.
He was united in marriage to Carrie M. Gamble at Maxwell, Iowa on Nov. 24, 1892. To this union were born two sons, Ralph N. and Harold L.
After living Maxwell he was in the mercantile, banking and drug business in Aurora, Iowa. He spent two years in Oregon and then returned to Iowa.
In December 1917, W. L., as most of us knew him, purchased the A. V. Graves Drug Store in Nevada, Iowa, operating the drug store with his sons Ralph and Harold until 1938 when he sold the store to his son Harold, who now operates the store with his son William.
He and his wife Carrie were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary in November, 1942.
In 1947 he received his Certificate of Fifty Years Registration signed by the Pharmacy Examiners and Governor Robert D. Blue.
He was honored in 1953 with the Community Club Service Award. He was a member of the Nevada Methodist church, Community Club, Odd Fellows Lodge and Knights of Pythias Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carrie M., who died on May 13, 1954, and three brothers and two sisters.
His is survived by this two sons, Ralph N. Tipton, Easton, Pa. and Harold L. Tipton, Nevada, Iowa; and two grandsons, Max E. Tipton, Easton, Pa. and William L. Tipton, Nevada, Iowa.
